Outside the Box

Recently a concern in the African American community is black men dating outside their race. There are many reasons that factor in to this happening. Of course most black women do not agree with this. From many that I have talk to say they do not like it or it makes them feel uneasy. One black man that I asked said “Black women have too much attitude”. One would agree with this statement from what you see on television and in movies. In all of Tyler Perry’s movies, such as Why Did I get Married? Their wives have a lot of attitude. They also seem to want to wear the pants in the relationship. Men do not like this at all. One African American male said “I feel like they try to take away my man hood”. A lot of males feel emasculate when they are with black women. Some black women feel as though they are too independent and black men are afraid of that. A man likes women who are able to depend on them for something. No man is going to want to hear “I don’t need you” or “I would be perfectly fine without you”. Men still want to feel in control and feel as though they are wearing the pants in the relationship. African American men dating outside the race may also be affected by slavery days.  A theory has been brought up that in slavery days white men would take advantage of African American women by raping them and taking them from their men.  As a result, it is concluded that psychologically this has affected black men to this day.  Therefore, black men see that dating Caucasian women is getting back at white males.  As they do not consciously know this it is as a factor, psychologically it has been proven that this may factor into reasons as to why black men have continuously dated outside their race.  Black men like to feel controlling at times and as a end result a lot of times they choose to not date African American women.  One may conclude that due to their desire of wanting control they steer away from dating within the race.  African American women carry many characteristics that make black men feel unwanted and powerless in their relationships.  Recently over the past few decades black women have become more independent and have continuously gained positions of power.  As they have continued to portray their independence it is said that black men have felt a loss of power.  Therefore, black men do not want to feel as if they do not have control in their relationship so they choose to date outside of their race, avoiding this problem.
